Full job description
Role Title: Set and Production Design Expert
Role Type: Contractor
Location: Remote
Opportunity Snapshot
Pay: $55 to $100 per hour
Location: Fully remote, worldwide
You’ll need: Professional experience designing, building or decorating sets for film, TV, theatre, events, commercials or photography
Your tasks: Review set designs and briefs, judge how well they fit the story, the space and the camera, and explain your decisions in writing
You’ll review set and production design work and judge it: what works, what doesn’t, and why. This is a good fit if you work as a production designer, set designer, art director or set decorator and make decisions about how a space looks and works for film, TV, theatre, events or photography. You need professional experience designing or building sets for real productions, and clear written English.
Scope of Work
- Look at set designs, room setups or production concepts and judge which one is stronger for a given script, brief or budget.
- Check scale, layout, sightlines, color, materials and how the space would work for actors and camera.
- Flag problems that would show up on the day (a set that does not fit the shot, a material that looks fake on camera, items wrong for the period).
- Check that a design fits the story, the setting and the budget.
- Write a short explanation for each decision so a reviewer can follow your reasoning.
What we’re looking for
- Professional work as a production designer, set designer, art director, set decorator, assistant art director or theatre designer.
- Experience with real productions: scripts or briefs, budgets, builds, shoot or install days and working with other departments.
- Comfort with design tools such as SketchUp, AutoCAD, Vectorworks, Rhino or Photoshop, or strong hand drafting. Not all are required.
- Comfort explaining why one design works and another doesn’t.
- Clear written English.
How the selection process works
- Apply with your resume and a short profile.
- Complete the curation interview. It is a short conversation about your experience with exhibitions, collections and attribution. You don’t need to prepare, look at anything or write anything. Finishing it is what moves your application forward.
- Review. We check your experience against what the project needs.
- Onboarding and first task. If selected, you get the guidelines and start with an initial task, which is reviewed before you continue.
